Soft Maps / Haptic Lab

Soft-Maps from Haptic Lab’s Emily Fischer, a Brooklyn-based architect and designer, started in 2002 as an academic experiment in tactile wayfinding. The quilts were inspired by Emily’s mother Peggy who had begun losing her eyesight. These works of art are quilted maps of cities and neighborhoods that represent someone’s unique place in the world. For a child, it can be a way to learn their neighborhood and its landmarks in a tactile, easily remembered way. Notice the Vancouver map, third image in? “ Our items are mostly produced in small editions and are sometimes unique, depending on the material we find. If we come across a beautiful piece of vintage leather we buy it, even if it’s only enough for one little bag.
