Sashiko

Sashiko (刺し子?, literally “little stabs”) is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. The white cotton thread on the traditional indigo blue cloth gives sashiko its distinctive appearance. I found kits on Etsy here. (images are from all over the web; hands are from Water-fall)

Edit: I just discovered SRI Threads and I’m positive some of the photos shown here are from their blog. If you are interested, there are loads more gorgeous samples of Sashiko on the gallery’s site.

Make a Room

I love the look of this kitchen by Petra Bindel- it seems that everything in has a sentimental or practical purpose for being here, nothing more, nothing for show. Try these for a similar look: handmade, hand painted custom letters ($52); tiny hand thrown clay bowls ($11 each); beautiful ornate vintage mirror ($69); and a set of old canning jars for storage ($22). (all photos of items from Etsy, and copyright belong to their respective owners)

Catherine Stewart

I have always been under the spell of these works by Catherine Stewart. I love the blend of science, letters and art in them - they speak to all of my loves. I was fortune enough to take a couple of photo-intaglio courses under Catherine’s guidance, on Granville Island. I miss not being able to continue with the etching, now that I’ve moved far away. (all images are copyright Catherine Stewart)
